Saint Vedavyasa divided the Vedas and created the eighteen Puranas, known as Ashtadasa Puranas, to make Vedic knowledge accessible to everyone. As a pioneer journalist, Vyasa wrote these Puranas to present stories, history, geography, philosophy, dharma, and arts in an engaging manner for both intellectuals and laypeople. Unlike many modern journalists who focus on sensationalism, Vyasa used storytelling to guide people toward dharma and the Supreme, setting a standard for clean, purposeful writing.

Vyasa composed these 18 Puranas in four lakh granthas, each grantha being a stanza of 32 syllables. The largest, Skanda Purana, comprises one lakh granthas, while the remaining 17 Puranas share three lakh granthas. Additionally, Vyasa authored the Mahabharata, a work of one lakh granthas. Each Purana focuses on different deities, including Shaiva, Vaishnava, and Shakta traditions. The Ashtadasa Puranas include the Brahma Purana, Padma Purana, Vishnu Purana, Shiva Purana, Bhagavatam, Narada Purana, Markandeya Purana, Agni Purana, Bhavishya Purana, Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Linga Purana, Varaha Purana, Skanda Purana, Vamana Purana, Kurma Purana, Matsya Purana, Garuda Purana, and Brahmanda Purana.
